Where Are You?

That’s the very first question that God asked any human being (recorded in Scripture in Genesis 3). God posed it to Adam and Eve as they were hiding from Him due to their rebellion against Him, due to their feelings of shame and embarrassment that resulted from their rebellion. Now, since God is omniscient (He knows everything!), why did He ask that in the first place?

Maybe it was God’s way of bringing Adam to a confessional realization of where he was, and as a result, what he needed to do to get back on track in life!

This series deals with those places we occupy when God asks that question of us. Of course, God’s desire is to get us to where He wants us to be, so come see how God helped other biblical characters get back on the right track in life. Hopefully, it will work for you as well!

Summer Sermons

In the 1989 movie entitled “Uncle Buck,” the lateJohn Candy plays the leading role of Uncle Buck.In a family crisis, he is summoned to care for twonieces and a nephew (with whom he has not been that close). Macaulay Culkin is Miles the nephew. When Miles meets Buck for the first time, it is oneof the most humorous scenes from this movie. Miles rapidly asks his uncle a series of questions (moreof a professional police interrogation). When Uncle Buck inquires as to why he asks so many questions, the memorable quote is, “I’m a kid, that’s my job.”

Every parent knows that children are curious and inquisitive. They ask lots of questions. It is one of the ways that they expand their understanding or how they learn things. Many of their numerous inquiries begin with “why.”

I believe that as God’s children we can learn more about our heavenly Father, His nature, and His will for our lives by asking questions. During the morning worship services of the summer I will address some of the questions that many people have asked God,questions that begin with the word “why.” Some of the questions that we will raise for discussion and then look to God’s Word for help are
as follows:

Why don’t you answer all of my prayers?
Why do you love us so much when we are so disobedient?
Why do I do bad things when I really want to do good things?
Why did you create a place called hell?
Why are people so cruel and hateful?
Why do really good people experience so much suffering?
Why do you allow pain and suffering in your world?
Why do so many people reject you and your people?
Why do you allow so many parents to abuse their children?

Come and join us as we seek to strengthen our relationships with God and encourage one another as a result of the times we spend seeking an encounter with our God. By the way, when you are away and miss a worship service, I encourage you to visit our website at www.southmain.org and listen to the sermon that you missed, or better yet, subscribe to the podcast of the messages.

God's Top 10 List for 2010

South Main Baptist Church Sermons

By Dr. Ron Lyles

Late Night television talk show host, David Letterman, has popularized “Top 10” lists by presenting one each night on his show for the past twenty+ years. His listings are intended to make fun of something or someone; a form of comedy entertainment.

During the Sunday morning services for the next three months (January through March), Dr. Lyles will present a series of messages entitled “God’s Top 10 List for 2010.” The sermons will reveal God’s top priorities or values for our lives in this year and every other year of our lives. Come join us at 8:15 or 10:45 a.m. each Sunday as we count down God’s top ten guidelines for responsible attitudes and actions.
