About Our Church
The South Main Baptist Church of Pasadena was constituted as a new church in May, 1954. This new church was born when a group decided to remain at 224 South Main after First Baptist Church had voted to move to a new location. The new church began with over 500 charter members.
Dr. E. Leslie Carlson, Professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, was the Interim Pastor for this new congregation. South Main called Dr. B. J. Martin to be her first pastor. Dr. Martin assumed this responsibility in January of 1955 and served South Main admirably for 26 years until he accepted an administrative position at Houston Baptist University in 1980. After an eight month interim under the leadership of Dr. Ray Mayfield, Jr., South Main called Dr. Ron Lyles as her second pastor in 1981.
